Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Today I watched Ghosts of Mars. Everyone said it was the worst of
the lot. I'll admit it wasn't great, and is a disappointment as a
Carpenter film (though I have to give credit to someone who can
write, direct, *and* do the music for a bunch of decent films).
I still can't figure out why the main
characters didn't get possessed. They were killing hundreds of
possessed guys, yet the spirits of those hundreds never bothered to
possess the six or so unpossessed people? Too much was left
unexplained, and by the end of the movie I really didn't *care* if
they bothered to explain it. The two blonde cops looked too much
alike. It took me half the way through the movie before I could
really tell them apart. And once they realized that Martians
wouldn't invade a host that was on drugs, why didn't everyone start
popping pills. The last three lines of dialog seemed forced and
badly written. ("You'd make a hell of a crook" "You'd make a hell of
a cop" "Let's go kick some ass"). Ugh. Still, 40% of the movies
I've seen in my life were worse than this movie, so it gets a "5".
Too many unanswered questions. Ending was too campy.
And as I'm half-way through watching it with Natasha & John
Carpenter's commentary on, I have to recommend this as the way to
watch it. I haven't been able to stop laughing for the past hour!
