Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985)
Genre: Drama
Plot Summary: Luis Molina and Valentin Arregui are cell mates in a South American prison. Luis, a homosexual, is found guilty of immoral behaviour and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. During the time they spend together, the two men come to understand and respect one another.
An old girlfriend once couldn't believe I hated this movie so much, until she heard the build-up.
A bunch of the guys and I headed to the video store in 1986 looking for a good "guy" movie.
We couldn't find any Arnold or Stallone movies we hadn't seen.
Then someone spotted "Kiss of the Spider Woman".
"Cool! Sounds like a sci-fi movie with chicks in it."
No one bothered to read the synopsis on the back cover before bringing the video home. Big mistake!
A bunch of testosterone-filled guys wanting to see chicks and fights and things blowing up aren't going to enjoy a movie about homosexual guys in a South American prison.
Trust me on this one.
For what it's worth, that girlfriend said she had seen the play or read the book or something and said it was excellent.
I guess mindset going into a mvoie and who you see it with says a lot about how much you'll enjoy a movie.
