Hack-Man Report of the PPV
People that know me know that I stopped giving "star" ratings a few
years back and have instead adopted the rating scale of "how much
money was this match worth?" At the end, I add it all up and see if
the PPV as a whole was worth the sum of its matches.
1. Raven d. Saturn with the Evenflow DDT in 10:39
Probably the best match of the night, and had some decent crowd heat
(especially for the high spots). Raven took three bumps into the
guard rail (where he leaves his feet and goes in back-first). I
expected them to brawl all through the "beach" props that were set
up in the entranceway. Actually, I expected better from these two,
but maybe I'm just jaded. FWIW, Saturn now wears wrestling trunks
instead of the cut-off jeans that half of WCW now wears. RATING:
$3.00
2. Juventud Guerrera d. Kidman in 9:44 with the 450 splash
Good match, but again, I expect better from these two, especially on
a PPV (and Juvy should have turned it up a notch since they were
within spitting distance of Mexico). RATING: $2.75
3. Stevie Ray d. Chavo Guerrero Jr. by submission in 1:45 during the
handshake
RATING: $1.00 (all for the comic value and total unexpectedness of
the finish)
4. Eddie Guerrero d. Chavo Guerrero Jr. with a rollup in 11:55
-- per stipulation, Chavo started shaving his own head
Bonus points for Shawn guessing the ending right and Wade guessing
wrong. :-P There was a wicked dropkick to Chavo's back that had me
cringing. Oh, and this was the third match tonight to have someone
get crotched on the top rope. RATING: $2.50
5. Konnan d. Disco Inferno with the Tequila Sunrise in 2:16
Great comedy by Disco and Wright before the bout. The match should
have gone longer, and Konan should have played more toward the
pro-Mexican crowd. RATING: $1.50
6. Giant d. Kevin Greene in 6:57 after the Chokeslam
Greene showed that he was more prepared than either of the NBA
players on tonight's card. I was guessing the match would be three
and a half minutes. Others in the group were expecting 2:10.
Greene earned his money for the night. RATING: $2.00
7. Rey Misterio Jr. d. Chris Jericho in 4:00 with a rollup
-- Misterio wins the WCW Cruiserweight title
Rey looked to be in good shape. He's put on a few pounds, but
didn't have a gut. Looks like he's been in the cancer bed a lot
over the last month. He did miss about 4 or 5 spots, but made up
for it with insane flying moves that we've been missing. Good bit
with Jericho (with cane and top hat) and JJ Dillon before the match.
RATING: $2.10
8. Booker T d. Bret Hart by DQ when Hart used a chair at 8:27
I was expecting the ten minute time limit draw (since I was pretty
sure Bret didn't want to be the TV champ, but also didn't want to
lose the match) but this works okay too. I'm kind of at a loss as
to why this chairshot (outside the ring) was cause for a DQ but none
of the other over the past few years have been). Best work I've
seen out of Bret this year, but that's not saying much. RATING:
$1.75
9. Goldberg d. Curt Hennig with the usual at 3:51
-- Goldberg retains WCW World title
As all the YAWNs have been saying for the last week, this should
have been a 20-second squash considering how much credibility Curt
has these days. I've seen Goldberg do better. I've seen Curt do a
lot better (but not in the last 4 years). Considering Curt was in
the ring, I expected a lot worse, but would have preferred a shorter
match. RATING: $0.75
At this point, there was one match left, but only two hours had gone
by. Was WCW going to try to drag out the NBA match for 45 minutes?
Nope. Ten minutes of ring intros and ten minutes of post-match
celebration cut it down under 25 minutes.
10. Hollywood Hogan & Dennis Rodman d. Dallas Page & Karl Malone when Hogan
pinned Page following an Apocalypse from Disciple in 23:44
I expected this to be under ten minutes. Rodman looked like he was
injured about 5 minutes into the match. The EMT or a trainer went
to check on him when he tagged out to Hogan at one point. Kanyon
did a good job of getting Malone trained for as man moves as he
needed to execute. Malone didn't turn on DDP (and Greene didn't
turn on Goldberg earlier in the night either).
This was probably the worst PPV WCW has had this year. I realize
everyone else says that after EVERY WCW PPV ;) but I'll back it up
with the ratings. TOTAL RATING: $17.35 Yup. That makes it the
worst WCW PPV and the only one it was better than was the WWF
Unforgiven. Hell just the Cactus match alone from the last WWF PPV
was better than all the matches on this PPV combined! For those of
you that don't want to search through DejaNews, I gave that single
match a $20.00 rating.
WCW Spring Stampede was $24.10
WWF Unforgiven was $ 9.95
WCW Slamboree was $27.95
WCW Great American Bash was $28.05
WWF King of the Ring was $22.50
P.S. For those who thought that Goldberg lost to Piper a little
over a year ago as one of the "unknowns" that Piper wanted in as his
partners (that the crowd simply booed the hell out of) it wasn't
him. It looked like Johnny Swinger (or maybe Johnny Attitude) as
the first guy, Horshu as the second, and a no-name getting hit from
behind by the short boxer guy.
