Embrace of the Vampire (1994)
Genre:Horror
Tagline:The innocence is over.
Plot Summary:Charlotte is a good girl virgin who is having some very bad dreams about sex. These dreams are courtesy of the vampire. Charlotte begins to change but as long as she remains pure for three days, the vampire will take her and they will live eternally together.
I think the genre field is an ignorant classification. This is clearly a romance film, and there are probably less than ten seconds of anything remotely "horror" related in the entire unrated version.
Just a wonderful acting job (even when her clothes are on) by Alyssa Milano, who plays Charlotte, a seventeen year old college freshman.
The film started out with entirely too much footage of the vampire (played by Martin Kemp) talking to himself.
There were a lot of scenes that just didn't make sense (Charlotte wouldn't let her boyfriend of 14 months see her topless, but she has no problem with the girl down the hall helping her out of her clothes and feeling her up?)
Harold Pruett did a passable job playing the whipped boyfriend Chris.
Much like the "girl power" shows (Charmed, Dark Angel, Birds of Prey, Charlie's Angels, etc.), this film is clearly written for a female audience, but then they throw in some hot women so the guys don't mind watching it with their girlfriends.
Alyssa Milano does an amazing job at something that's difficult: playing an innocent virgin who can look sexy and sultry at the same time.
The writing is thin in the "plot" department, but the characters are well-defined and the acting made up for the shortcomings.
I'll peg it squarely on the line between "must rent" and "buy a copy for your home collection".
This one-sided DVD has four viewing options: R-rated wide screen, unrated wide screen, R-rated full screen, unrated full screen.
Audio options are 5.1 Dolby Surround or 2.0 stereo (both English).
Subtitles are English only.
No commentary track recorded.
The only other "DVD extras" included (other than "jump to a scene") are filmographies lifted directly from the IMDB.com website.
