coverSpy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)buy

Genre: Action / Comedy / Adventure / Family / Fantasy / Sci-Fi
Tagline: 3rd Mission. 3rd Dimension
Plot Outline: Carmen's caught in a virtual reality game designed by the Kids' new nemesis, the Toymaker (Stallone). It's up to Juni to save his sister, and ultimately the world.

I saw this in the theater this afternoon. It wouldn't have been one of my top ten movies of what was playing, but I had kids with and they got to pick the movie.

First of all, I didn't realize Antonio Banderas was in the movie until just now when I went to look up the cast list on IMDB. What role did he have? His character is listed as Gregorio Cortez, so I assume he was one of the relatives of the main kid. Is this the only movie he's made where he isn't jumping away from an explosion in slow motion toward the camera?

I didn't see either of the first two movies in the seriesbuy, so I don't know if that detracted from how much I would have enjoyed #-D or not.

I was surprised to see Ricardo Montalban in the film, but he did a decent job given the role. And they had the requisite nod to his old car commercials with the line about "corinthian leather".

I got a chuckle out of Sylvester Stallone's role(s) but thought they did a horrible job with the makeup for the version of him where he was wearing a bald wig.

There were a few nice scenes where the three dimensionalism worked well, but for the most part it was superfluous. I noticed they had about a five minute break in the middle of the movie where you were supposed to remove your glasses (probably to avoid headaches).

I also now see that Mike Judge (of Beavis & Butt-Head fame) was in the movie, though I didn't pay attention to which character "Donnagon Giggles" was.

The whole movie appeared to be a giant advertisement for both robot toys and various video games (I'm sure the tie-ins will make more money than the movie itself does).

I'm sure the movie will be enough to keep kids from burning down the house for 90 minutes (once it hits the home market) but reviewing it as an adult I won't give it very high marks. It'll settle in somewhere around Captain Ron (1992), Planet of the Apes (2001), and Thir13en Ghosts (2001).
