Archive-Name: faql.rec.arts.startrek.abroad Last updated 18 September 1997 STAR TREK OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA This posting is intended to cut down on the "often asked questions" that pop up every few months about Star Trek outside of Canada and USA. It is one of a number of periodic postings posted to r.a.s.*. For a full list of informational postings, please read the "LIST OF PERIODIC POSTINGS" article in rec.arts.startrek.misc. For a list of acronyms used in this (and other) postings, please refer to the "ACRONYM LIST" article found in rec.arts.startrek.misc. =========================================================================== 1) Africa 2) Australia 3) Belgium 4) Czech Republic 5) Finland 6) Germany 7) Indonesia 8) Ireland 9) Italy 10) Japan 11) Korea 12) The Netherlands 13) New Zealand 14) The Philippines 15) Spain 16) Sweden 17) Switzerland 18) Turkey 19) United Kingdom 20) Misc =========================================================================== 1) ========== AFRICA TNG can be seen in South Africa at 17h00 on Sundays on TV1. As of February 1994 they are in season 2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) ========== AUSTRALIA TNG is shown on Tuesdays at 23:00 on the Nine Network and associated stations around Australia (Sydney (channel 9), Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, GWN in country WA, and most regional centres). They are currently (12/94) finishing season six. The network has bought up through the end of season six. TNG is shown in Perth at 11:00 on Australian Western Standard Time. They are currently in season three (August 1993). TNG is shown once a week on Wednesday or Thursday nights (late) currently in season four (7/93) (not sure what city this is). DS9 airs on Thursdays at 23:00 on the Nine Network. They are currently (12/94) in the middle of season one. CIC Video have released TNG episodes through the end of season 2, as well as a lot of TNG episodes from season 5. They released the first 12 DS9 episodes (2/95). The nine network has just purchased DS9 (at least season 1) with a whole lot of other Paramount shows and movies, although there is contension as to when they will commence screening it (1995?). This is because of the video release. (info updated 2 November 1993) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) ========== BELGIUM TNG: Sundays at 18:50 on Ka2. They are currently (2/95) in the middle of season 5. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) ========== CZECH REPUBLIC DS9: [DAY] at [TIME] on the new NOVA channel. Currently in season 1 (May 1994). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) ========== FINLAND The Finnish Channel 3 (MTV3) has been airing TNG since September 1990 (but not continuously). By 15 August 1993 they have aired through "The Best of Both Worlds II" but has now simply stated that showing TNG is not economically possible, as it has "only" 200.000+ viewers. They recommend that Paramount would sell the series to cable channel PTV, which promptly bought the show and is planning to start with season 4 in December 1993. Finnish TV2 has reportedly said that DS9 is not a possibility on TV2 as it's Star Trek and MTV3 has already dropped TNG so "it can't be successfull enough" (though MTV3 approximated TNG would get 400.000+ viewers at prime time AND TV2 is not a commercial channel, so economical reasons (apart from perhaps the price of the show itself) can't be the reason). So currently finns are getting TNG on a cable channel that has rather limited audience (I think under 1.5M out of 5M that live here can theoretically get it) and there is practically no chance of either TNG or DS9 to land on some nationwide channel for now. Due to the scrambling of Sky One those with the dish are also out of Trek, but luckily they got to see it up to season 6 end (except for Descent). The country's channels are being juggled around and when all settles down, TNG (and possibly DS9) may get aired--but nothing definite has been planned. A Channel 3 representative said in FinnCon that they will NEVER air Star Trek anymore because of low ratings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) ========== GERMANY TOS is being aired on SAT1. They are currently (2/95) at the end of season 3. SAT1 has also broadcast the first five Star Trek movies and the 25th Anniversary of Star Trek. Star Trek: Generations opened in movie theaters on February 9, 1995 TNG: SAT1 air five episodes a week (Monday through Friday) at either 15.45 or 16.00 with two commercial breaks. As of February 1995 they have shown all 177 episodes. They will probably repeat the series again in spring of 1995. DS9: SAT1 aired DS9 seasons 1-2 (2/95). According to SAT1 videotext, a decoder for the SKY multichannel WITHOUT SMART CARD will be availiable in Germany (for 1000 DM). But it decodes any of the multichannel without further payment. They say this is legal. Please check the according pages (470 ff) on SAT1 for further info. (7/93) TNG and DS9 videos are available from CIC England. Rumors are that SAT1 will finish its run of "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" (5 times a week), then re-air all of the TNG episodes, then show the new DS9 episodes (season 3), then start broadcasting Voyager at the end of 1995. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) ========== INDONESIA TNG is shown every Sunday at 4:00 pm on RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia) which covers most Indonesian cities. As of December 1993, they are in the middle of season 4. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) ========== IRELAND TNG is shown once a week on Sundays on Network 2 at 19:05. They are currently done with season 7 (12/94). DS9 airs on Tuesdays at 19:00 on Network 2. They are currently (12/94) in the middle of season 1. Sky is available in Ireland, too, and BBC from the UK is available on cable. Videos are released at the same rate and schedule as the UK. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) ========== ITALY TNG began broadcast in Italy on the national channel Italia 1 some time in the summer of 1992 (they showed a few season one episodes the previous summer, but stopped with no warning). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) ========== JAPAN TNG is shown in Sendai on Tuesdays at 0:50 AM. They are currently airing season three (7/93). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) ========== KOREA TNG: Tuesdays at 19:55 on the Army Channel. Currently in season 5 (April 1994). DS9: They aired season 1. There are rumors that the show will move to channel 36 (in Korean) but this has not happened as of yet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) ========== THE NETHERLANDS TNG was shown during the summers (started in 1992) on KRO TV (NL One) in English with subtitles in stereo with full credits and no commercials. They have stopped airing them (2/95). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) ========== NEW ZEALAND TNG: Tuesdays at 19:30 on TV3. They are currently (2/95) at the end of season 6 about to start season 7. DS9: Fridays at 19:30 on TV3. They are currently (2/95) at the start of season 1. CIC-Video are selling seasons 2-6 of TNG and season 1 of DS9. Individual episodes from later seasons are available for rental. (2/95) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) ========== THE PHILIPPEANS TNG: Fridays at 9:00 pm on RPN channel 9 (Metro Manila). In the middle of season 2 (March 1994)). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) ========== SPAIN In 1991, telemadrid in Madrid aired seasons one and two of TNG. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) ========== SWEDEN TOS is being shown Monday through Friday at 14:00 on Femman. (3/95) TNG is being shown Fridays at 20:00 on Femman. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) ========== SWITZERLAND Not shown anymore, as of February 1994. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) ========== TURKEY TOS was shown in the 1970s by TRT TV (then the only TV station in the country). Currently, Kanal 6 (private) shows TOS on Sunday evenings. (March 1994) TAS was shown by the same station in 1983-1984. TNG season one was shown in 1990 by STAR1, the first private sender. The first few eps of TNG were distributed as videocassettes but bombed. DS9 was promised by ShowTv (private) months ago but has not delivered yet. (March 1994) The first 4 movies were shown by TRT. That's all for Turkish-language ST. BUT, some lucky people in some Turkish cities have access to cable TV which carries SAT1 (German) and used to carry SkyOne (English). Because of the SkyOne connection, these lucky people have seen all but the last of the eps of the first 6 seasons of TNG on SkyOne, and are currently watching the first season of DS9 on SAT1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) ========== UNITED KINGDOM TOS: No longer shown. TNG: Wednesdays 18:00 on BBC2 in stereo. The BBC owns the rights through season 7. They *may* not show "Genesis" from Season 7, and if it does it has already been edited down to 30 minutes to satisfy the violence-repressed UK (much like the nudity-repressed USA). Sky One is once again showing TNG. They are also airing TNG on Sundays at 20:00 (12/94). DS9: Daily at 17:00 and 22:00 on Sky One and Sundays at 15:00 and 21:00 on Sky One. (3/95) CIC Video are already releasing TNG season seven episodes in the UK. They have released up to cassette 80 as of May 1994. They were up to season four in January 1993. Unless your TV is NTSC-compatible, you won't be able to get a decent picture. The best you'll manage with an NTSC signal into a PAL TV is a B/W, squished image (twiddle the vertical hold and vertical size controls and you can probably make it look normal) with no audio. Talk to someone in the rec.video newsgroup for a better explanation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is written in English as I'm not fluent enough to translate every other language.
